Copy and paste allows you to work fast between say, a text editor such as notepad or MS word, and a web document, and lets you quickly share text between both applications, without having to retype everything over and over again.
What happens is that when you copy something, your computer puts it in it's internal "clipboard" and keeps it there for you to use in another application.
The Basics
To cut or copy and paste an object into a document:
- Select the object you would like to move and highlight it using the mouse.
- Right click the mouse and choose Cut or Copy (depending on whether you want to just move it or make a copy of it).
- Then go to the location where you would like to place the object and right click again. This time choose Paste.
An alternate method of this task is to highlight your object then press the CTRL key and C key at the same time (this copies the object) then move to your desired location and press the CTRL key and the V key at the same time (this pastes the object). You may also use the CTRL key and the X key to cut the object.
To cut or copy and paste text from one document to another:
-
Highlight the text in the document that you wish to copy by holding down the left mouse button and dragging the cursor down the screen. When you have reached the last line you want to copy, release the left mouse button.
-
Click on Edit on the tool bar at the upper left side of the screen. Click on Copy.
-
Open the destination document.
-
Click on Edit at the upper left side of the screen. Click on Paste. The text copied from the source document will be pasted.
The four commands (cmds)
There are four basic Cmd key combinations you'll be using when you cut/copy/paste text. Here they are, along with what they do:
- Cmd + A – Highlights the entire page.
- Cmd + C - Copies the highlighted text to the clipboard.
- Cmd + X - Cuts the highlighted text to the clipboard. This essentially moves text between documents.
- Cmd + V - Pastes the text from the clipboard into the destination document.
