Downloading is the most popular way to transfer files between computers. Many programs are available on the web to download. Downloading is the main way that computer viruses are spread as well. Always go to trusted sources to download from (www.microsoft.com, www.adobe.com, www.aol.com, etc.). Never open a file without first downloading it to your computer, then scanning it with an anti-virus program. (Do this even if downloading from trusted sources.)
The Basics
- Click the link of the file you wish to have.
- You will be prompted to open or save. Always save it.
- Save the file to your computer desktop (makes it easier to find later).
- Depending on your Internet connection speed and file size, a download may take a few minutes or even several hours.
- When completed, scan the file for viruses.
- If it is safe, use the file as needed. (If it is a program, install it. If it is a data file, open it.)
