In most Microsoft Office applications there are two options when saving files: Save and Save As. Sometimes this can be the source of some confusion among users. In essence here's the difference: Save will simply overwrite your existing file once you've saved it for the first time, whereas Save As will give you the chance to save it as a different file name and in a different location on your computer.

The Basics

To save a file
  1. On the File menu of the program you are working in, click Save.
  2. If you haven't saved your file before, type a name for the file in File name and chose a location on your computer to save it.
Note: To save a copy of a file under a different name or in a different location, on the File menu, click Save As, and then specify a file name and location where you want to save the file.
